Memorial Day

This Memorial Day got me thinking about a recent visit to Naval Air Station Pensacola.  I was up early on a Sunday morning, before the extreme heat of the day kicked in and decided to take one last drive around the base just before leaving to catch my flight back home.  I had driven by Barrancas Cemetery several times on this visit.  It’s hard to miss thousands of symetrical tombstones lined in perfect attention. I decided to stop by the cemetery and take a few moments to pay my respects.

When I arrived, dew was still on the grass and the tombstones glowed… illuminated  by the warm morning sunlight. It’s sobering to see all the names, dates and inscriptions for loved ones on the tombstones. As I walked up and down aisle after aisle, I couldn’t help but wonder about about the stories of the men and women buried there. So many have sacrificed so much for our country and liberty.

There is a lot of history at NAS Pensacola with Fort Barrancas, the Naval Aviation Museum, the Lighthouse… especially at Barrancas cemetery.
